Students need to finish reading part 2 of To Kill a Mockingbird by this due date. There will be a reading quiz.

Adaptation Book Project

 

Students are reading a book of their choice that was turned into a movie or TV show. They will use the Google Slide template I created on the Google Classroom to create a presentation analyzing the book and comparing it to it's film or TV adaptation.The instructions are on the Google Classroom. Students choose their book by Feb. 23 and have started the Google Slide. They will not have much class time to work on this- they need to be working on it outside of class. I am here before or after school if students need help or access to a computer to work on it. Students will present these to the class. Presenting it is half the grade. It is a test grade.

We will have a test over chapters 1-11. Study your test review (it's on the Google Classroom if you were absent). 

 

Test dates:
Periods 1, 5, and 6-8: Tuesday, March 27
Period 3: Wednesday, March 28

TKM Chapters 1-5 Reading & Vocab Quiz

 

*TKM means the book To Kill A Mockingbird.

Students must have chapters 1-5 read BEFORE they come to class. There will be a quiz over those chapters and this vocab: Vocab for chapters 1-5

Students a copy of the book that they can bring home.

We will have a mock STAAR English I EOC test on Feb. 27. At about 7:50AM students will go to their assigned testing room and take a released STAAR English I EOC test under STAAR testing conditions. This will be a test grade in the gradebook. The essay portion of it will count as a second test grade in the gradebook. 

Poetry Lingo Vocab Quiz

 

We will have a quiz over the terms and definitions on this Quizlet Link. They can use this link to study. They also have a paper copy of these words and definitions. Periods # 1 and 5-8 will take the quiz on Wed, Jan. 31. 3rd period will take the quiz on Thursday, 2/1.

 

Mythic Story Project

 

Students will write a short story about a character who goes on a hero's journey. The story must contain all 5 parts of the hero's journey. Those parts must be labeled. The story must include character and symbol archetypes. The outline must be completed and approved. 

 

A few students asked me if they could turn the story into a comic book or script instead. That is fine as long as it contains and labels all five stages of the hero's journey plus the character and symbol archetypes.

Myth Test

 

This week we will have a test over three mythic stories that we've read together plus one that they will read on their own: "Perseus," "The Fenris Wolf," and "Coyote and Crow." The reading portion of the test is open book. There is a vocabulary portion as well. Students cannot use a textbook or dictionary on the vocabulary portion of the test.

 

Students should study the quizzes I handed back and the notes they took (the worksheets).

Periods #1-5 will take the test on 1/24 (this may take two class periods)

Periods #6-8 will take the test on 1/25 (this may take two class periods)

Benchmark this week. The benchmark is NOT the final exam. However, it is two test grades during this 9 weeks (one grade for the writing and one grade for the overall score). 

Book Trailer Video and Reflection Paper due

 

The instructions are on the Google Classroom. Students will turn in both the video and the reflection paper to the Google Classroom. I am available before and after school all week if they need help.

Benchmark Unit Test

 

This is a test grade. We will use these results to figure out who needs to start coming in during advisory for tutoring.

Test #2

 

We will have a test over the three texts we read "Liberty," "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl." and "Legal Alien."  We are focusing on comparing the theme sacrifice and reward across all three texts. 

Reading and Annotation packets for "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" and "Legal Alien" are due. They should be done as homework and finished before they come to class on the due date. We will do activities and discussions in class around these texts.

Students are revising these this week. They should be turned in before midnight on Friday to the Google Classroom. 

Vocab Quiz Week #5

 

Students will have a vocabulary quiz this week. They wrote down the words and definitions in class. They can also find them on this Quizlet deck. Quizlet is a great way to study:

Vocabulary Quiz #1

 

Each week students will have a set of vocabulary words related to that weeks reading. They will have a vocab quiz on the last day of the week that I have their class. 

 

Each week the vocab list will be added to the Google Doc linked below. Students will also write down the words and definitions in their binder.
