Maxie I. Turner Chapter of the National Honor Society
Selection Procedure

Selection to National Honor Society is a privilege, not a right. Students do not apply for membership. Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.

  • Each National Honor Society member is expected to pay annual dues, attend meetings regularly, and complete service project hours, both with the chapter and individually.
  • To be eligible for membership, the candidate must be a junior or senior.
  • He/she must have been in attendance at CHS for one semester.
  • No student who has been assigned to AEP or expelled from school will be considered for membership.
  • Candidates must have a cumulative scholastic average of at least 4.0. Candidates will then be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership, and character.
All candidates who qualify scholastically may then complete a student activity form. This form is used to obtain information regarding the student’s leadership and service activities. Students must have 8 points of leadership/service activities that can be verified and are documented by an adult sponsor of that activity or organization.
In addition to scholastic and character eligibility, the candidates must exemplify leadership and service qualities.

Faculty evaluations are used to support the strength of a student’s candidacy in the areas of service, leadership, and character.

The selection procedure takes place during the beginning of the first semester of each school year. A formal induction ceremony is held in November for the new inductees.
