Independent Studies (Period 8)

Course Description

Communication skills are important in all aspects of life. Students who have mastered concepts and developed skills in introductory courses should be provided an opportunity to extend their knowledge and expand their skills in more advanced study. Independent Study in Speech provides opportunity for advanced students to plan, organize, produce, perform, and evaluate a project that enables them to develop advanced skills in communication, critical thinking, and problem solving (description from Texas Education Agency TEKS). Each student enrolled in Independent Study has a particular area of study in which he or she should be concentrating. This may include UIL speaking events, Journalism, Literary Criticism, Social Studies, Current Events, Spelling, and any other event as deemed necessary.
